Title: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: vichnaiev on October 28, 2012, 05:14
Gentleman, you may have heard that Marvel Heroes is UE3 based. I'm trying to export models/anims from it, but I'm running into an issue:

I found the package I wanted: Deadpool, for example, but can't extract. Get the following errors:

Loading package: UC__MarvelPlayer_DeadPool_SF.upk Ver: 859/3 Engine: 9668 Names: 1186 Exports: 1283 Imports: 123 Game: 8000
Specified package(s) has no supported objects

If I try with to extract only the skeletal mesh I get following:

Loading package: UC__MarvelPlayer_DeadPool_SF.upk Ver: 859/3 Engine: 9668 Names: 1186 Exports: 1283 Imports: 123 Game: 8000
Export "deadpool" was found in package UC__MarvelPlayer_DeadPool_SF
WARNING: Unknown class "skeletalmesh" for object "deadpool"
Found 1 object(s)

*_SF.upk files are usually contains sounds only.

Not this one, gildor. There's an object in there named "deadpool" and it is a skeletalmesh. There are also lots of anim sequences.

I've made a quick fix for this game - umodel now ignores case for object classes (this game is lowercased all internal names for unknown reason). This game is supported now - except for SkeletalMesh objects.

Where I can download the beta?

It's a closed beta, you need a key. Apply on the official website (marvelheroes.com).

Thanks a lot gildor!! Do you plan to, in the future, add support to Skeletals?

I discovered a error...

If i try extract skeletalmesh with file .tfc in the same folder, umodel crash, and dont extract nothing...

But if i try extract skeletalmesh without file .tfc, extract fine.

It looks like this game has customized TFC system, umodel tries to set file pointer to position "-1" (which is not correct, of course).

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta

I have lot of error, Guildor when you think make it compatible extraction UPK to PSK PSA TGA

If you try extract with file .xxx alone, this will extract, meshes, skeleton, animations, fine, only textures will extract bad 48x48 very small...

But if you will try extract files in the same folder file .TFC will appear all this errors.

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: Teoma on April 07, 2013, 02:31
i think you will need to use -tag ,
Code:
-lzo|lzx|zlib   force compression method for fully-compressed packages

So isnt it possible to extract the meshes? I tried exporting X23's file, but it shows the loading of the textures but when it gets to the SkeletalMesh it gives me an error. Are the meshes not supported yet? :) It doesnt matter if they arent, i can wait lol.

yes If i delete file .tfc in folder, It work for extract upk to psk psa and little tga (because i delete tfc)

I know it s possible i extract big tga because exemple Hulk is extract on this website with correct tga
http://thefree3dmodels.com/stuff/characters/hulk/14-1-0-3772
http://thefree3dmodels.com/stuff/characters/hulk/14-1-0-5060

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: TRDaz on April 07, 2013, 22:28
@logansan25: No, it doesnt, I realised that they just read the textures but not fully extracted them.

@Darksimonus: Those Hulk models arent from Marvel Heroes, those are from The Incredible Hulk.

EDIT: Got the meshes extracted but yes, the textures are tiny, ill try and see if disabling the meshes exporting works to export textures.

EDIT2: Nope, didnt work. Are textures stored in the .tfc? I was hoping there was a .tfc export tool to get the textures out, I looked online, cant find anything so I dont think its possible.

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: Gildor on April 08, 2013, 16:54
Yes, thanks.
Here I can see that upk has stored wrong position for texture lookup (it equals to -1). So the TFC system is different in this game, it is not compatible with original UE3. That's why umodel is not able to work with texture file caches.
The solution is simple and it was typed by someone earlier in this thread - just remove TFC files. Perhaps I'll make some "-notfc" option in the future.

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta

to use ripperdx should have access to all the characters and I'm not even on the textures is extract good qualities

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: oclock on April 28, 2013, 11:01
any idea why the textures are 64x64 only ?
i'm trying to find a way to extract the original size because the 64x64 look aweful in maya & 3ds.
other than that, it works like a charm ! thanks to Gildor for the help.

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: oclock on April 28, 2013, 17:54
oh never mind... Gildor said there is no way to extract the full textures for now.
and it looks like 3d ripper dx cant do the job with this one,
you cant run the MarvelGame.exe manually, something called bitraider actually launches the MarvelGame.exe.

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: newlegend on April 28, 2013, 22:20
you can use ninja ripper
just run the launch the game and while the game is running get ninja ripper to play it
it worked for me

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: oclock on April 28, 2013, 23:41
how ?
i have to run the marvel heroes launcher and then i start ninja ripper and run the MarvelGame.exe through it ?
didnt work for me...
i can only run brwc.exe with ninja ripper, not MarvelGame.exe.
so yeah, when i run brwc.exe via ninja ripper it actually launches the game but it wont capture anything.
the _Ripper directory is empty.
there are 10 hours left before the beta ends... any help would be real appreciated.

An update:

MArvel Heroes completely compressed their files, me thinks. I get an Error: Assertion Pos = ArPos error while trying to open any new files or old since an update.

EDIT: Actually, this only happens when umodel is in the directory of Marvel Heroes. Take the upk out and its still 64x64 textures :(

Anyway, something is compressed or encrypted in CharTextures.tfc. Hopefully when Gildor gets his stuff straight we can have support for this game?

Could someone provide me usual set for researching this game, please? Also, due to specific problems with this game, I'll need some .tfc file which is used by some package. I'll need relatively small tfc file (ask about that before uploading - I can't download very large files now). How to know which file exactly? Let's look at example (from one of the earlier posts):

Here you can see, that package uses CharTexture.tfc to store mipmaps, and the package used with umodel is UC__MarvelPlayer_Thor_SF.upk. So for this test I'll need CharTexture.tfc and UC__MarvelPlayer_Thor_SF.upk files, if CharTextures is not larger than 50 Mb.

I checked the exe, found texture streaming code. Unfortunately I have no idea where tfc information is stored.
By the way I added code which will prevent umodel from crash when loading packages from games with custom TFC system (Marvel Heroes is not the first one). Now umodel will print error message to log and continue execution.

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: Gildor on July 16, 2013, 13:29
I don't know. I can't download the game to check it by myself. I think there should be some file which holds links between textures and tfc file. In original UE3 all links are stored inside textures. In some games with custom tfc systems these links are stored in dedicated file - for example, Bioshock 1-2 stores links in .bdl file, DC Universe Online in {TFC_NAME}_Remap.upk etc.

I spent a few days (partially of course) on this game and figured out changes in its TFC system. It's quite different and requires some coding to support in umodel. Unfortunately I'm almost empty on time now.

That´s already epic that you managed to figure it out =D

Any update on this? :) I've been trying to rip textures via Ninja Ripper but it takes incredibly long.

Not yet. This game requires a lot of time which I don't have.

Monthly bump, out of curiosity, have you given this a shot Gildor?

Sorry, I didn't have time for umodel in last month :(

Considering the noticable lack of any posts here since my last bump, I'm assuming this game is doomed?

I can only repeat my last message ...
I'm working a lot now, and going back to umodel rarely, just for a few hours in a week or two. Marvel Heroes requires much more time than I have (and I'm still unsure that I can support this game - it has very strange modifications in TFC system which I can't find in a code and I must "guess" them).

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: Gildor on November 19, 2013, 12:12
I think I should clarify this a bit:
I'm working a lot now

I'm working from home now, and I have hourly rate (not fixed salary). So my time if distributed between following things:
1) work (i.e. making a money for family)
2) family
3) umodel

So, when I'm working on umodel, I'm spending less time for (1) and (2).

Thanks Gildor u made greath job with this game, abouth textures can somebody please made a video guide how to configure Ninja Ripper, Install and Run in Marvel Heroes, since its very confused how this works, this use wrap system but looks like we need replace some dx.dlls and other things, a video can be usefully, and if somebody can share textures (not sendspace) can be greath!!!.

Hello, Gildor. Marvel Heroes recently had a huge update and I noticed that the client executable is now different, so I decided to take a leap of faith and check out umodel's compatibility.

There is a difference.

This was the old error we used to get on Marvel Heroes.

This is the new one.

I have no idea what BulkOffset means, but as you can see, umodel recognizes the texture name and size., it just doens't load the textures into the viewer.

and if you look here, umodel no longer says "STRIPPED TO 64x64" for the texture.

lemme know if u want new sample files to look at.

Hi.
Do you have the "TextureFileCacheManifest.bin" file near the packages and tfc?

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: pepsiguy_2 on April 04, 2014, 12:28
yeah, the files/folders are all in same folder/their original place. I also believe that the file may have been updated as well. There's also "AssetPackageCache.bin"

So, it looks like TFC system was changed in this game again ...

Haha, wow. Well, maybe it changed for the better?

well, if you're ever bored and have some spare time, check if these files help. A upk package of a character, TextureFileCacheManifest and AssetCache.

Hi everyone,
I'm would like to extract strings (item descriptions) from English.pck but I'm not really sure how to do that.
I've managed to look into pck, but I don't know how to work with pck. I tried renaming them hoping it was just a matter of changing the extension but this did not the trick

Any help will be much appreciated!

I don't know how they did it, but the people on these forums: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1330160&page=1 seem to know how to extract textures from this game, including the most recent GotG costumes. Some russian mod for GTA:SA includes all of the GotG costume textures here: http://www.thegtaplace.com/downloads/f722-txd-workshop-4-0b

Not helpful for umodel, I know, but at least there is some way to get them still.

The guys on facepunch used tools such as Ninja Ripper and GameAssassin to grab the textures. Im hoping this game gets supported fully someday, the texture grabbing seems to be very tedious, but I understand that Gildor doesnt have alot of time to work on this.

Hi guys. Here's some tool which could extract textures from this game
http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=14460

I'd like to send a message there offering integration of this tool's code into UModel, but I can't access my xentax account - so, probably later ...

I know that the game's been dead for a while now. But I am wondering whether it's possible for full support integration now that no further development on the binaries is happening. Specifically I'm wanting to extract the environment/maps, I would use Ninjaripper to do this but it requires an online server, which no longer exists, to load the game.

I can act as intermediary for Xentax communication if you like Gildor. I made the same offer to daemon1 the texture tool's developer. As well as sent a link to this thread, so that he might try making contact with you through it.

Checked a few pages back, it seems this game has custom TFC system. This is probably hardest thing for reverse engineering as there's no "anchors" in code which I can find to start reverse engineering, every time I worked with custom TFC I spent a few full days just for research.

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: scibott on June 02, 2019, 07:37
Daemon1 thinks that it's impossible to integrate his code because he's just guessing their sizes. Not sure if he means filesize or the dimensions. But the characters' tfc files pretty much extract with Umodel, textures just need another tool.

Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Beta
Post by: Gildor on June 02, 2019, 10:31
I think I remember something about this game. Someone sent me C# code which extracts TFC files from this game, and it was really hard to integrate it. Not because of C#-ness, but because of different TFC compression structures.

Also I'm trying to avoid doing things which will force me to duplicate lots of code with some changes, just for a single game. I did that a lot before, and UE3 code has a lot of garbage (IMHO), what makes code very hard to understand in a few years, and very hard to maintain if I need to do some global refactoring.
