How do you edit the .xxx files?

I'm pretty new to Umodel, and I've only used it to export models. However, I would like to modify some of the things in Infinity Blade, such as the helmets, shields, and weapons. Is there any way I can replace their meshes in the .xxx file?

I just thought it would be neat to change the models in the game, or retexture them.
