Export -out= options
« on: June 18, 2024, 13:16 »

As I understand it, Umodel can export either to the default folder or to a selected directory.

But is it possible to generate separate directories for each source file/archive, so that the name for the folder is taken from it.

For example, in QuickBMS, if you specify the -D command, this is what happens.

Something similar is possible here. At least with the help of .bat/other wizardry?

@Abchihba: umodel is reproducing internal file tree, but it's different for different engines and thus there is no universal solution for such tasks. For example, for UE3 each file is a package and it's a collection of objects, which can be saved/exported as all objects in one folder with package name or package name + folders with objects classes + objects (with respective option). For UE4/5 games there are assets within packages, but each asset can contain multiple objects. And currently most sensible approach is used with output folder + internal path to asset/object (if asset contains only one object) - or output folder + internal path to asset + folder with asset name + multiple objects. By objects I mean only those objects of supported types. On top of that additional subfolder in the path will break all cross-linking by default, because materials are supposed to load textures via certain paths, and so on.

I can only suggest to post-process exported/extracted objects in the required way - like rename, move to subfolder, etc - with third-party tools or batch scripts or somehow else. But I hardly imagine how it can be done for undefined cases, explained above (like, for assets with multiple objects how to understand if it's actual folder in path or generated folder with asset name).

Unrelated to the topic, but there was previously a request for exposing "-out" (for extracting) and "Keep Directory Structure" options to command line. I'll leave it here for possible reference: https://www.gildor.org/smf/index.php?topic=8229.0
