Transformers Dark of the Moon Project
« on: May 12, 2013, 07:24 »

Hey guys,

I'm working on a short transformers video and I'm looking to use the models and animation from the Transformers Dark of the Moon video game.

I've got the models/animations working inside of 3ds max but getting the models to transform from vehicle to robot looks pretty tricky since there's two separate models (one vehicle/one robot)

I'm not sure how they did the animations so seamlessly in the video game but maybe someone on these forums has some advice on how to achieve the same 'transforming' animation like in this video,

http://youtu.be/ku-yHy0GstQ?t=6m12s

I have the individual animations for both the robot and vehicle transformation animations but having them work in sync I have no idea how to achieve that like the video.

Any advice would be HUGELY appreciated!

Thank you so much.

I tried to merge them in Cinema 4D by keyframing visibility of meshes, but I think I failed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5aA2XTMb04

hey rroobboo!

thanks for sharing your progress, really glad to see someone else tried doing what I'm trying to do.

good attempt on your part but yeah I agree the way they animate from robot to vehicle is really odd. like you said on your video, it's faked.

I would even play the gameplay footage off youtube frame by frame and i can see where the transition would go from robot to vehicle. for some reason it looks very passable in the game, but then when I'm in 3ds max, to make the transformation seamless...looks pretty awkward.

i'm still going to try my hand at it and see if i can get at least a decent transformation but faking it the transformation to the best of my ability. I'm planning to make a quick 2 minute cinematic, and i'm going to have a 2-shot process where, we see the car transforming and then quickly cut the shot to another angle and we'll just suddenly see the robot transformed already and see if that fools anyone into thinking it all happened seamlessly.

i'll post my progress on here and see if you or anyone else can offer some advice on how to improve the animation.

best!
