Does decompressing upk hits gpu performance?
« on: August 03, 2025, 10:33 »

Hi all,
I worked on Batman arkham knight localization using the below tool.
https://github.com/rm-NoobInCoding/BatmanAK-SubtitleTool
Which mods the upk after decompressing it.
Issues happened to other gamer that I'm giving him the mod, he didn't face any problems with the game with original upk files, but on the mod crashes like in the below happens to him.

Problem happens on pc with gtx 1650
Mine with rtx 3070 doesn't have any crashes.

@Abuali: Decompressed packages can affect loading times and cause stutters if the game is running from low-speed hdd (for ssd it wouldn't really noticeable). But that's in case if all game will be decompressed, with a single decompressed package there is no difference. Can't tell about integrity of the package(s), since you didn't provide samples, but most confusing part in the error message is that it looks like running in 32-bit environment, while the game only supports 64-bit one. It would be better to submit an issue on the tool's github with samples and all.

@spiritovod
Sample

On my end, I checked the below
1. In my pc, Installed fresh windows 10
2. Updated it to latest updates, drivers... Etc
3. Installed fresh steam app
4. I "added" the modded downloaded game that was working perfectly in my pc using windows 11 into steam library, I run it and received the same crash.
5. I redownloaded the game, mod it, game works fine.

Could it be stuff related to these Microsoft visual c++ runtimes?

I told that other guy if he done something similar, he confirmed that he redownloaded the game and mod it but still getting that crash.

@Abuali: Overall package format seems fine, as it can be read by umodel without issues. Most likely the problem is related to modded part, as modding tool is replacing references to existing objects with newly appended to the package. The issue can be caused by undefined behavior, when the game is trying to access replaced entries due to savedata parameters or particular game/system settings, like default language. The reason why it may crash on one system and may not on another is related to general memory handling and garbage in uninitialized pointers/values.

Another reason can be some edge case for unicode handling, for example adding character, which can't be processed properly with current locale settings on certain pc. Anyway, you can easily check if the issue is related to modded part by using decompressed unmodified package - if it works fine on target pc, then the issue is related to modding and should be addressed to the modding tool.

Honestly, I still didn't know what was the issue... But what I did do as a solution, I took all modded upk files that I did patch on my main pc, that was working fine, and shared it with the community, didn't received any complaints yet.
