Exporting one mesh format as another
« on: August 12, 2009, 02:47 »

Is it possible in current versions of Umodel (Or future versions) to export a given mesh type as a different format to the original? For example, exporting a SkeletalMesh (Psk and Psa) as Unreal 3D format (_d.3d and _a.3d)

I have had some trouble trying to export some Skeletal mesh files using Umodel. I use the -uc command to create a .uc file along with the Psk and Psa files, but the animations and frames are absent from the uc spat out by Umodel.

.3d is a vertex mesh format. It is not suitable for skeletal mesh.
uc file is generally created for displaying some skeletal mesh properties (scale, rotation, translation etc). It is not sufficient to import mesh into UnrealEd - most work should be done "by hands".

Ok thanks for the info  Wink

I managed to import the .PSK and .PSA into Milkshape 3D, but Milkshape doesn't split up the animation frames, and recognises the WHOLE PSA as one single animation, not separate ones (Fire, altfire, reload, select etc...)

I'll try and Figure out this .uc issue and find the correct import code.

You can export using -md5 ! There you can Select, Animation what you need to import!

Milkshape has a bunch of bugs with ActorX format (psk/psa). If your purpose is to load animated mesh into 3ds max - you can use md5mesh/md5anim format instead.
Milkshape has no md5anim support.

Heh, I never though of using -md5. I always overlooked it. Thanks!

I know, Milkshape crashes when I try to load _a.3d files.  Undecided
_d.3d files work fine though  Grin

Thanks Gildor, I now have the mesh in .md5mesh format and each of the animations in .md5anim format. I'll look for the md5mesh importer plugin for 3dx max and I'll report on my progress.

My main goal is to port Unreal Tournament 2003 Weapons into Unreal 1.

I just looked at the script (Not a clue what any of it means Tongue ) but there is a small fixme stating that there is a bug importing animations (md5anim). I'll use an older version of 3ds max and test with that. If that doesn't work, then I'll upgrade and try again.

Are you using md5importer from this site?

I am now and it works thanks.

Once I have imported the md5anim file into 3ds max, do I need to assign it to something, or does the importer do it all for me?
Also, can I import more than 1 animation at a time? It seems I can only select 1.
